Stop Motion is Javier Pérez

Updated: Sep 26, 2023

Can you tell our readers about yourself? (where you are from, education, interests, fun fact, etc.)

Hi! I'm Javier Pérez Estrella, a digital artist from Guayaquil, Ecuador. I studied Graphic Design and Audiovisual Production in ESPOL (Guayaquil).

Tell us about the art you create. Is there a story you can share about your inspiration for your work? or a specific piece?

In 2013 while I was starting my project, I saw a grape my mom had bought. I thought, "They look like balloons. Why didn't anyone use them as balloons?" That's how my illustration of the boy with grapes was born.

What part of your life has inspired you to create?

Creations came to a halt following the tragic death of my father. I was forced to grow up quickly and help carry my family's finances. Pain and stress stifled his desire to create, but luckily my creative block was temporary. I dove back into the graphic design scene full force a few years later, gaining international and local recognition with my project "Instagram Experiments".

How did you discover art?

I am fascinated with everyday life's intricacies, and my desire to capture and connect with them led to many creative endeavors during my childhood. I created: comic strips, magazines, wallets, toys, and homemade TV productions.

"The minimalist aesthetic of my work is a revolution against the oversaturated nature of today’s world.

Can you tell us about a significant moment on your artist journey?

When people in schools and colleges started to use my style as a new way to create their illustrations.

Which piece of yours is your favorite? and why?

My favorite is the "boy with grapes" because it gave me a lot of recognition.

What art or artist has influenced your work?

My work was influenced by illustrator Marta Altés and surrealists Salvador Dalí and Renee Magritte.

What do you think your work/style says about you?

I describe my illustration style as minimalist. I like to explore and combine different mediums, such as stop-motion animation, which helps me bring pieces to life.

What would you say if you could pass on advice to any artist? And why?

Try to read about many topics, such as art, politics, and science, to open your mind to new ways of creation.

"...My goal is to reunite viewers with my inner child enabling them to view the world, and common objects within it, in different ways."

Is there anything else you want our readers to know about your artwork(s)? About the artist behind the art?

I'm just a guy trying to spread some creativity in the world.

Top three things you needed to be where you are today.

Perseverance, time, and patience.
